In 1921, architect Jean Baptiste Dewin drew up the plans for this monumental town hall, which would be built between 1935 and 1938. It was representative of the flourishing health of the town at that time; nothing was too beautiful.
The Art Deco style is magnified here, the sculptures and bas-reliefs are by great artists including Victor Rousseau. The stained glass windows are creations by Gaston Baltus executed by Florent Colpaert.
Inside, the monumental staircase leads to the wedding hall, as well as the public offices. A majestic belfry dominates the whole ensemble, with its gold leaf statues reminiscent of those of the Palais Stoclet, of which Dewin was a great admirer.
The main porch located under the tower, and the entrance to the public offices are decorated with beautiful bas-reliefs representing labour and family.
A complete renovation of the building took place between 2014 and 2024.
Fortunately, the whole building had not suffered any depravations but had aged, and required a complete overhaul, with updating of construction techniques, heating, lighting and integration of new technologies.
A remarkable project, everything has been restored, from the exotic wood paneling to the period furniture, the marbles, the chandeliers, the remarkable banisters and ceremonial staircases, to the immense roofs.
The whole is worth a visit.
The building had been listed since October 1992.
