Rationalism

In Brussels, it is to Louis-Herman De Koninck that we owe the most remarkable examples of this simple style. Contemporary of the Art Deco style, but so much more futuristic, Rationalism is made of geometric shapes and raw materials such as concrete washed in thin veils, exposed metal beams, metal frames, glass bricks,… these constructions are characterized by an abandonment of ornamentation and a search for economy. This results in austere houses, with sometimes unwelcoming facades but bright and spacious interiors.

The poor quality of the innovative materials used, the implementation of daring techniques, the very poor energy and acoustic performance got the better of many buildings and marked the rapid end of this special style.
